Sherrardswood Ladies FC v AFC DUNSTABLE LADIES BLUES FC
Today's match featured the ladies away to Sherradswood Ladies in the second round of the league cup. The team featured Goalkeeper Kirsty Scott, Right Back Becca Lightfoot, Centre Backs Beth Cusack and Lauren Swinnerton, Left Back Shannon Planson. Wingers Georgie Liscio and Keira How, Centre Mids Charlie Peters and Emma Wells and Cj Wakefield up front.
On a boggy and slippy pitch, with some confusion over the earlier kick off time and the referee being late the Blues had little time to warm up and prepare and as a result didn't get off to the best of starts.
With there being 11 available players it seemed the ladies treated this as a luxury and were caught on the back foot a number of times. Communication was scarce and reaction to the ball was slow. The opposition took advantage of this and were given several easy goals from within the box, leaving keeper Kirsty Scott 'stuck in the mud'.
The one consolation goal came shortly before the half time whistle, when player of the match Sophie Mason intercepted the ball at the half way line to send Keira How on down the side line. How beat her marker to cross the ball into the 6 yard box where CJ Wakefield was duly waiting to tap the ball in from close range.
Half time score 7-1.
A firm half time talk from skipper Charlie Peters meant the second half saw a much more willing performance from the ladies. They took more time on the ball and played some consistent football, only conceding a further 3 goals but sadly not gaining any further opportunities to add to the scoreline despite How and Wakefield both having opportunities.
Another disappointing result for the Blues with the opposition scoresheet once again in double figures, particuarly frustrating when spirits were initially more positive due to having 11 players.
We look ahead to the final game of 2014 with a view to keeping our heads high, working as a unit to give 100% and hopefully changing the opposition's perceived expectations of our team by giving them a more closely contested game.
