Houghton Athletic FC v AFC DUNSTABLE LADIES BLUES FC

This week the Blues faced local rivals Houghton Athletic in the Bedfordshire County Cup.

Manager Matt Goodman opted for a 4-5-1 formation which featured Kirsty Scott in goal, Rebecca Lightfoot at right back, Beth Cusack and Lauren Swinnerton at centre backs and Emma Wells at left back. Charlie Peters, Sophie Mason and Carly Orme in the middle with Georgie Liscio and Don Heckert on the wings and CJ Wakefield up top.

The first half saw Dunstable start very slow. The ladies were second to most balls allowing too much time and space for the opposition to attack. There were several occasions where we were seen rushing on the ball and sending the ball into the air despite there being a strong wind throughout the game.

After a few stern words from the manager at half time, the ladies upped their performance and started to play the good quality football that they are capable of. They attacked the space and moved the ball around well on the ground, putting constant pressure on Houghton and winning the ball higher up the pitch.

Sophie Mason was a key player in the middle of the field, winning several headers and tackles and breaking up the Houghton attacks.

Other good performances came once again from Carly Orme who was strong and direct, CJ Wakefield who kept up the pressure on the Houghton defence and got herself on the score sheet and Don Heckert who used her pace down the wings to draw in the opposition. Player of the match went to Sophie Mason for her consistent display.
