AFC DUNSTABLE LADIES BLUES FC v Woburn Lionesses
After a 6 week break in the season the Blues returned to Creasey Park to face Woburn Lionesses. Now becoming a familiar occurrence, the Blues were once again low on numbers and faced the opposition with just 9 players.
Today's team consisted of Kirsty Scott, who played a brilliant 90 minutes between the posts, pulling off some brave and acrobatic saves as well as keeping composed to deny the opposition in several one on one attacks. Emma Wells was once again required to play out of position at left back and did well to defend against Woburn's quickest player. Centre backs featured Sophie Mason, who was as resilient and reliable as ever and Shannon Planson, despite being unwell giving it 100% in an unpreferred position. Right back, in her usual position and as consistent as always was Rebecca Lightfoot.
The midfield consisted of captain and two time goal scorer, Charlie Peters and Cj Wakefield, who together combined well to cause some trouble for the opposition in the middle of the park. On the wings we welcomed back Keira How from injury and Georgie Liscio who both kept the oppositon on their toes for the full 90 minutes.
The initial goal from the home side came when How won possession from an aerial ball which went to the feet of Wakefield. She linked well with Peters who then went on a poweful solo run from half way to the edge of the box, shrugged off two defenders and then saw her effort hit the underside of the cross bar to thankfully cross the line. The second goal once again came from Peters in the second half where a back pass to the opposition keeper was chased down by the captain who stole the ball and cooly slotted into the net.
As the game went on with just 9 players and the oppositon having several substitutions the stamina of the home side understandably started to lag and there was only so much Kirsty Scott could do to prevent some of the goals going in. Player of the match deservingly went to the goalkeeper though for without her, the scoreline could have been much more punishing.
Once again the scoreline frustratingly did not reflect the nature of the game, and despite it seemingly becoming a regular excuse, the ladies put up a great fight and were on the back foot from the start. The quality of football played as a team is improving and there were some promising displays of team work and enthusiasm. We now look ahead to the second round of the league cup with hopefully a full team!
